In
the middle of Italy, about 6,000 ft up in the Umbrian mountains
lies the tiny maze like village of Castelluccio. It sits atop
a 300 ft hill surrounded by a perfectly flat plateau edged by
1,100 ft of smooth rounded grass covered hills with road access
to just about every one. Forests are very few and obstacles are
non existent. The bottom is perfectly flat and you can see from
one edge to the other 2 miles away giving a full 360 degree flying
site where the weather is fantastic. And if that's not all there
is a perfect 300 ft training hill in the centre with steps cut
out at different levels.
So,
if it's that good why isn't it used by any one.
Well, it is. We have been going there for the last 6 years and the French,Swiss and just about everyone in Europe for even longer. |

| The
little village doesn't boast an active nightlife in fact quite
the opposite but the food is good, the multi-national company enriching,
and as you sit outside with your drinks the peace and quite washes
over you, and through you, focusing your thoughts and calming your
soul ready for the next morning. |

Flying
in to Rome airport with Easyjet on a Saturday evening means a
full 7 days of flying potential. In the little village of Castelluccio
it really is compulsory, on at least one of the days, to get
up at 6 in the morning and witness the truly amazing site of
the ground hugging mist in the morning.
Being
right there also means the potential of early flights. As the
sun comes over the mountain tops at about 8 am, the western side
of the hills warm to give perfect soarable conditions early in
the morning. You can either participate or watch the multicoloured
patchwork canopy covered hillside from the comfort of the village
as the pilots prepare for the first flights of the day. |

The
flying is relaxed with gentle thermals to practice in and the
whole plateau to explore. XC's are possible but only if you're
quite experienced as landing outside of the plateau, in some
areas, can be a little tricky.
Instruction
is from pre-CP to finding your first thermal and even thermalling
practice and little XC's around the plateau are all possible.
No matter which way the wind blows or how high the thermals the
flying can only be described as awesome. |

For
any non flying friends, for a bit of night life or on the rare
occasion that the weathers not right the nearby walled town of
Norcia provides for all our other needs. 200 years older than Rome
this little walled town is a joy to wander around. The shopping
is excellent, the restaurants a real treat and the history is everywhere.
You
just can't escape from the culture and beauty of Norcia and with
cobbled streets and the friendly locals why would you want to,
apart from going to fly.
Our first priority is flying but if it's really off the menu then a trip to Rome
to see the sites can be organised. |
